What is Codpiece International?

Well, Codpiece International is...

The "Bring Back the Codpiece" campaign is the brain-child of Jennifer Strait. Jennifer is a Professor in Apparel, Merchandising and Textiles at Washington State University (WSU or Wazzu!). Her research interests include the study of the codpiece, and particularly the effect of trying to re-introduce its use in the present day

One of the biggest problems encountered is the ignorance of what the codpiece is. Most people assume it is some piece of fish! Therefore, part of the campaign is to educate people about this part of clothing history.

Front of shirt picture The most obvious way to promote/sell/advertise anything these days is to put it on a T-shirt...which is exactly what we did. One hundred of them to be exact. The result...a limited, first edition, Mark I, "Bring Back the Codpiece" T-shirt, and a very distinguishing T-shirt it is too!
Back of shirt picture The T-shirt was designed and created by Jennifer and depicts 3 men from different time periods wearing codpieces. The periods shown are roughly the early 15th century, mid-sixteenth century, and the twenty-first century! The last figure depicts the artists interpretation of how the codpiece could be incorporated into modern clothing. The "Bring Back the Codpiece" slogan is depicted beneath this sketch. On the reverse side of the shirt can be found a definition of the word, codpiece.
Unfortunately dictionary definitions are very nondescript. Webster's dictionary defines it incorrectly and rather prudishly, as "a fly". The Concise Oxford English Dictionary defines it as "an appendage, like a small bag or flap, at the front of a man's breeches". Some lesser dictonaries don't even have an entry, and the last thing some others would have you understand is that the codpiece housed the penis!

Being dissatisfied with the available descriptions, Jennifer decided to compile her own version as follows,

Cod piece (kod' pes), n. A prominent, embellished athletic cup worn on the front of mens' breeches thoughout the 15th and 16th centuries. Sizes ranged from small pouches to large, padded, vertical, crescent-shaped protuberances, exaggerating the size of the male sex organ. Also used to carry small coins and the family jewels.

I hope you agree that it conveys a much better mental image. Of course, if you are still confused, you can always check out the pictures in the "What is a codpiece" section. If you would like to own one of these exclusive T-shirts, check out our Codpiece International Catalog where you can find out how to order one.

Our ultimate goal is to manufacture and market a "modern codpiece." However, we aren't about to run before we can walk. Your interest and support in the company, particularly through the purchase of Codpiece International products will make this dream a reality.
